Details
This is an old primitive wooden salt box designed for wall hanging in the kitchen. It was made from old wood and has a visible peg on one side of the box (see photos) and small nails to support construction.
These boxes were sometimes referred to as “boite a sel” in French and were essential fixtures for salt storage in early kitchens.
It has a flip lid that has been reattached with silver anchors (not original).
It measures approximately 5.75” wide by 5.4” deep by 9.5” tall to the top of the backside where there is a hole for hanging on the wall.
The front has a crack in the wood, but it doesn’t appear to affect the integrity of this box.
It’s a nice primitive collectible for a farmhouse or country kitchen wall.
