Antique Brass Church Processional Cross Head Topper

$299.00

Details

This is a true treasure. It is from the late 19th to early 20th century and was a cross topper inserted onto a pole for carrying at the head of a liturgical procession during Christian church services.
The cross features embossed floral and scroll patterns across the arms of the cross, accented by a central floral medallion, a common Christian motif symbolizing the purity and beauty of Christ or the Virgin Mary.
The circular band connecting the crossbars is a halo or nimbus design, symbolizing the divine light of holiness. In religious metalworking, this design represents eternity, victory and the presence of God, reminiscent of a Celtic or high cross structure.
Its heavy, stylized floral detail and nimbus ring are classic markers of the Neo-Gothic and Neo-Byzantine design revival that peaked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The separate and smooth cylindrical socket welded to the ornate cross head is identical to construction methods seen in church hardware from companies operating around 1900.
This cross is a beauty and is approximately 105 to 145 years old. It measures about 6.25”W x 14”H. It’s a valued antique religious collectible.
