Antique German Victorian Fairing Trinket Box 19th Century Hunt Scene Conta Bohme

$38.49 $69.99

Details

This is an authentic antique, 19th century, Victorian fairing box made by the renowned German manufacturer Conta & Bohme in Poessneck, Germany.
The markings on the base verify its authenticity. It was made between 1870 and 1891. In 1891, the McKinley Tariff Act was passed forcing factories exporting goods to the U.S. and Great Britain to stamp “Made in Germany” somewhere on the piece. Given this piece doesn’t have this stamp, we know it was made prior to 1891.
These pieces are widely known as “fairings” because they were popular novelty prizes won or bought at local fairs during the Victorian era.
The front medallion image features a white relief silhouette of a seated figure against a dark green backdrop. This style mimics the classical jasperware or cameo jewelry, which was highly fashionable during the Victorian era.
The lid features a hunt riding scene with a riding hat, rifle, flask and gilded mirror frame.
This piece measures with the lid, about 4.25” long by 3” wide by nearly 4.5” tall to top of mirror frame. It is in nice condition for a collectible that is well over 100 years old. It looks like the tip top of the riding cap has a chip and the gold accents are worn in many areas. But remarkably this treasure has worn well over the past 100 years.
