Details
This is an authentic, vintage framed black paper silhouette of a woman wearing a wide brim hat. It is marked “A. Budd-Jack Silhouette” and “S.S. Kresge Co. St. Louis”.
The artist was a husband wife duo named Joseph Thomas Budziak and Mary Doedge. Joseph had a background in circus performance and together this couple became highly successful “newspaper scissor artists” in the mid-1930s.
They partnered with local newspapers and department stores across the Midwest to run promotional campaigns. This silhouette was cut during one of their promotional stops at the S.S. Kresge Company department store in St. Louis. S.S. Kresge was one of the largest five and dime retail chains in America and eventually evolved into the modern retail giant Kmart.
Because these silhouettes were rapidly hand-cut with scissors, live in front of the department store shoppers, each surviving profile is completely unique and is a one-of-a-kind historical keepsake.
In its frame, this piece measures about 4.5”W x 6.5”H.
