This is an amazing set of two large traditional hand-carved Indonesian Loro Blonyo Wedding Statues. They represent an inseparable bride and groom.
Originating from Java and Bali, Indonesia, they traditionally symbolize fertility, harmony and prosperity.
They are typically displayed as a pair representing Dewi Sri (the rice goddess) and Sadono (her consort).
They are hand carved figures featuring polychrome painted colors in shades of gray, red, yellow and green.
Based on their elongated style and paint colors, this set is classified as vintage to antique folk art, most likely dating circa 1930s to 1960s.
Visual aging clues indicate that older statues from the early to mid- 20th century develop fine cracks in the pigment layers (Craquelure) as the wood naturally shrinks and expands over time.
Based on the base of each piece, it’s clear that these statues have direct cross-cut tree rings and visible hand-saw marks, confirming that they were carved from a solid log rather than being cast, glued together, or mass produced using a modern lathe. The wood shows natural oxidation (darkening) around the edges from decades of sitting on flat surfaces. These clues strongly support their authenticity as vintage mid-century pieces.
They are in nice condition, but have a few flaws. The woman has a shoulder repair as seen in photos, while the man has a hairline crack on the base. Both pieces have Craquelure from age and scratches and marks from usage and age. I’ve provided lots of photos to help you determine condition.
They are quite large measuring about 16” tall by about 6” wide. At 16” tall, these statues are highly desirable and command a strong visual presence, in comparison to the 8 to 10 inch souvenirs.
Absolutely beautiful folk art pieces with history and collectibility.
