Details
This is a vintage cross featuring 14 distinct cast-relief panels of the Stations of the Cross. This cross was highly popular in Germany and France during the mid-century period.
This cross is unique in that a Chinese Pan Chang Knot or Mystic Knot has been added to the top of the cross and a Chinese decorative knotting tassel has been added to the bottom of the cross. The symbol on the tassel top is a highly auspicious emblem traditionally used in Chinese culture to symbolize marriage, love and harmonious unity.
Combining these two elements to a Catholic Stations of the Cross crucifix represents a form of inculturation or a blended family heirloom. It is common for East Asian Christian households, such as Chinese Catholic families, to pair traditional and cultural blessings together.
The cross alone measures about 10.5” x 6”. The Chinese knot at the top is about 9.5” long and the tassels at the bottom are about 19” long. Altogether, when hanging on the wall, this piece is about 40” tall.
It’s a beautiful religious treasure from the mid-century (1950s-1970s) and a nice collectible.
